BANNED RUSSELL / DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS

Between 1959 and 1970, Russell directed arts documentaries and films for the BBC including major contributions to the programs Monitor and Omnibus. In all, Ken Russell made three feature films and 33 drama-documentaries at the BBC. Ken Russell’s final film for the BBC would be his most controversial and would only be seen once in 1970, not to be seen again in public for another 50 years.

KEN RUSSELLS 1970 FILM “DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS” is essential viewing for those interested in in Ken Russell’s work, especially for those interested in the history of Ken Russell’s 1971 masterpiece “THE DEVILS”.

There is much to read on Russell and his BBC years, so I will not bore you here with mediocre biography. Instead we would like to direct you to some wonderful viewing and listening material. We have also included some related viewing on the story of Salome, Oscar Wilde’s play from the late 19th century (below we have included a print from an original program), Ken Russell’s film on Wilde’s play “Salome’s Last Dance” (1988) and for kicks we have included a rather tame clip from the 1953 film “Salome” featuring Rita Hayworth, a full length stream of Carmelo Bene’s wonderful 1972 film “Salome” and finally a full length stream of the 1922 silent film “Salomé” directed by Charles BryantAlla Nazimova.
